Starting at the point where water is delivered to the house, typically called the main, the plumber runs pipe to the various locations based on the home’s building or remodeling plan. Pipe is cut as needed and joined together with fittings. At the end of the pipe will be controls such as faucets, installed later. I’ll show you how to install plumbing and fixtures. The electrician starts where the electricity is delivered to the house, at the service panel, running wires to the new receptacles, fixtures, and switches. (Actually, electricians “pull” wire from the receptacle end to the panel for convenience, but the result is the same.) Fixtures are installed before or after the wall is enclosed, depending on the type of fixture. You’ll learn more about wiring and lighting systems in other sections of this website. Remodeling Words A service panel is the box or panel from which the electricity is distributed to the house circuits. It contains the circuit breakers and, usually, the main disconnect switch.

The water and electricity that runs through your house does so inside walls and floors. So once the walls, floors, and ceilings are framed, the plumbers and electricians do their work.
