Adding HVAC

As you know, there’s more to a bathroom than water and electricity. It takes additional systems to keep it clean and comfy including heat, ventilation, cabinets, and other fixtures.

If you’re adding rather than remodeling a bathroom you especially need to know about heating and ventilation systems. Heat for the room can be supplied from the existing home heating source, a furnace for example. Or you can install an independent heating source in the bathroom, such as an electric wall heater. The choice will depend on whether your home’s heating systems is already overtaxed and how easy it will be to extend the existing system to the new bathroom.

Ventilation systems are important to bathrooms, too. Besides renewing the air, the vent system should remove moisture from the air to keep mirrors and fixtures from collecting condensation. Excess moisture can damage surfaces as well as make some flooring materials slippery and unsafe. Bathroom Heating will cover bathroom heating and ventilation systems in greater detail. For now, consider that all these systems—foundation, flooring, walls, ceiling, plumbing, electrical, and heating and ventilation—are important to bathroom additions.

Remodeling Words

A vent is any opening, usually covered with screen or louvers, made to allow the circulation of air, usually into an attic or crawlspace. A ventilation system typically includes a fan.
