Installing Other Wiring

Hey, while you’re at it, why not install wiring and fixtures for your telephone, television, computer, stereo, home entertainment, intercom and security system? Before the walls are covered in drywall you can run the necessary wires to make installation easier. Or you can run a plastic pipe or conduit through the walls that you can use to install low-voltage wiring (phone, cable, audio) in the future. Just make sure you map out where it goes and where the junction boxes are so you can easily access them later.

What’s required to install these systems now? Design and planning. That is, decide where you want telephone jacks, TV cable, computer network connections, and security sensors. Then select the jacks or receptacles and wiring needed to connect the devices at a Radio Shack or other electronics parts store. Run the wiring and install any needed boxes before finishing the walls, then install the receptacles once the walls are done. Because these systems carry relatively low voltage (5v or less), safety is not much of an issue so inspection may not be required.

Alternately, new technology offers wireless remote operation and communication for telephones, computer networks, and even security equipment. So if installing wiring for these systems isn’t relatively easy, think outside the wall.
