Rigid insulation is usually a fiberboard material manufactured in sheets. Structural insulating boards range in densities from 15-31 lbs. per cubic foot and are fabricated into building boards, roof decking, sheathing, and wallboard. While they have moderately good insulating properties, their primary purpose is structural. The most common forms of rigid insulation is sheathing board in 1/2” and 25/32” thicknesses. It is coated or impregnated with an asphalt or other compound to provide water resistance. Sheets are 2’x8’ for horizontal installation and 4’x8’ or longer for vertical applications.
