Reflective Insulation

Most materials reflect some radiant heat, and some materials do so more than others. The more reflective materials include aluminum foil, sheet metal with tin coating, and paper products coated with a reflective oxide.

Reflective insulation is used in enclosed stud spaces, attics, and similar place to retard the transfer of radiated heat. They are effective only when used where the reflective surface faces an airspace at least 3/4 inch or more deep. Foil-type reflective insulation is often applied to insulation blankets.
