Unless you plan to do all the work yourself, finishing a basement requires contractors, subcontractors, or hired labor. A contractor or general contractor is a construction manager and often an experienced tradesperson (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) as well. In addition, a licensed contractor is require to have business experience as well. Remodeling Safety Make sure that the contractor or subcontractor you hire has adequate worker’s compensation insurance for any employees that work on your remodeling job. Otherwise, you may be liable for injuries. A subcontractor typically works for a general contractor by providing a specific trade or skill such as electrical or plumbing service. Alternately, you, the homeowner, can hire a subcontractor directly to tackle jobs you don’t want to or feel qualified to do yourself. If you have the needed skills but need some help you can hire labor. It may be a handyperson, a college student, or even a relative or friend to help you with the physical aspects of remodeling. In any case, part of preparing for finishing your basement is making sure you have or can hire the skills and labor needed to do the job quickly, efficiently, and on budget.
