The purpose of building codes is to ensure that a structure meets standardized health and safety requirements set up to protect you, your neighbors, and anyone who buys the house in the future. Contractors are required to know and build or remodel following these codes. If you’re doing some or all of your own remodeling you, too, must follow the codes.

Fortunately, local building codes are available through local building departments. Most are standardized throughout the nation with local variations based on local needs (for earthquake construction, tornado construction, etc.).
