Pipe Assembly

New piping will either be of plastic or copper. Because plastic pipes are larger and easier to work with than copper, most do-it-yourselfers (and most plumbers) prefer plastic. Which plastic pipes? If your home is relatively new and uses plastic pipes you can simply use the same size and type to extend the plumbing. The type and grade of pipes will be imprinted on the pipe, though you may have to look on a longer pipe to find readable data. In addition, your remodeling plans may include specifications for the pipe.

Plastic plumbing is easy to assemble. Here are typical steps:

* Cut the pipe to length with a miter or hack saw

* Clean the end of debris with a brush or sandpaper

* Dry-fit the fitting and mark for location

* Apply plumber’s primer to both surfaces to prepare for adhesion

* Apply plumber’s cement to both surfaces

* Assemble the components and allow them to dry before use

Assembling copper fittings goes like this:

* Cut the pipe to length with a pipe cutter

* Clean the end of debris with the cutter

* Slip the fitting over the pipe

* Flare the end of the pipe with the cutter tool

* Assemble the components and tighten with a wrench
