| Installing HVAC |

If you’re certain that the existing HVAC system is of sufficient power to handle the comfort needs of the finished basement, you can tie in to the main supply duct or to branches. Even if you are simultaneously resizing your HVAC system, you may be able to use and extend existing ducting. How to tie into existing ducting depends on what type of ducting your system has. Some systems are metal while others use flexible heating conduit to run between registers. In either case, here’s what you’ll do to tie in to existing ducting: * Find a seam or break point in the ducting where a branch can be installed * Cut the ducting and install a joint (available through HVAC suppliers) and branch ducting * Install the register

Depending on the design of your existing home, extending its HVAC system can be relatively easy or quite difficult. It will be difficult if the basement’s ceiling is already enclosed.
