| Installing Fixtures |

The plumbing discussed thus far is installed in open walls, walls that are framed but don’t yet have insulation and drywall on them. This portion of the job is called roughing in the plumbing. Installing fixtures (sinks, toilets, showers, tubs) is called finishing. Showers and tub enclosures typically are installed before drywall is installed because most don’t need drywall behind them; they are attached directly to the wall framing. However, most fixtures are installed later in the process, once the walls are closed. However, I’ll cover installing them all here. Remodeling Words Roughing-in plumbing means installing the basic, hidden parts of a plumbing system while the structure is in the framing stage. Finish plumbing is the installation of the visible parts of a plumbing system such as plumbing fixtures and faucets. Fortunately, plumbing fixtures are standardized. That is, most are of standard dimensions. The hot and cold water lines to a faucet are a standard distance apart and accept a standard size pipe from the hot and cold water sources. The opening at the base of a toilet is standard. That means you’ll be able to select fixtures based on design and your budget rather than what fits. Tools for installing plumbing fixtures include wrenches, screwdrivers, and other basic tools. The handiest tools are those specially made to install nuts underneath sink faucets. Remodeling Tips If you’re using plastic piping and fittings, make sure you don’t over-tighten them as they may leak or break.
