| Independent Heat and Cooling |
|
If your home doesn’t have a central heating and cooling system—or if it does and it’s not large enough to keep the basement comfortable—consider installing an independent system. An independent comfort system is one that heats or cools a single area rather than the entire house. For example, radiant heat in a bedroom is an independent system. So is a free-standing fireplace or a room air conditioner. Radiant heat systems typically require a specialized contractor or a highly-experienced do-it-yourselfer to install. However, installing a room air conditioner or plugging in a heater is easy to do. Just make sure that the unit’s capacity is at least 20 percent above the area’s heating or cooling requirements.
