If you already have detailed plans drawn up for finishing your home, the plumbing plans will show where new supply and DWV lines go. The plans will probably also show how the new plumbing ties in to the existing system. Alternately, you’ll need to find where the supply system enters and the DWV line exits the house. The main turn-off valve for the supply system typically is either inside the basement at the wall nearest the street (or well) or just outside the foundation at that point. Many plumbers install a red valve so it easily can be seen in case of an emergency. DWV systems don’t have shut-offs. However, their size (2 to 4 inches in diameter) and color (typically black) gives their location away.
