Page 1 of 2 You know that sunlight seems to change the shade of paint colors on a wall or ceiling. Unfortunately, many basements don’t have much natural light. Even artificial light impacts how colors are seen. Here are some tips for selecting paint colors based on natural and artificial light:
* Consider your flooring colors when selecting paint, even if the flooring isn’t in yet. Also consider the colors of furniture and drapes that will be placed in the room.
* Apply cool colors (green, blue, violet, gray) on walls that receive warm natural light such as from the south or west.
* Select warm colors (red, orange, brown, yellow) for walls that get cool natural light from the north and east.
* Buy samples of selected colors and apply them to a section of a wall to see how they look in the room with installed lighting.
* Smaller rooms seem larger if all surfaces are of the same color.
* Accent a room by painting one wall a color compatible with that on the other walls.
* Deemphasize a long room by painting the walls on opposite ends with a darker color or shade.
* Select colors based on the use and desired mood of the room; your paint store can help.
