Security Systems

The location of a basement often ensures security. A below-grade basement, for example, may only allow entrance through the house. Put some locks or sensors on any basement windows, install smoke detectors and you’re done. Daylight or walk-in basements, however, may have additional security needs depending on where the entrance is. If access is from the street or an alley it may not be seen from the home’s primary entrance.

Remodeling Tips

If you’re planning to add a security system to your home, consider hiring a security service or advisor to help you design it for optimum value. Also, it’s less expensive to have a security system wire your home if they can do so while the basement walls are open.

If you already have a security system on your home, chances are you need to at least extend it to your basement. If a security system contractor installed the primary system, let the contractor extend the system to your basement. If you installed it yourself, an extension may be relatively easy.
