Installing Security Systems

Basic security systems can be installed by the do-it-yourselfer. Components and kits can be purchased at retail electronic stores and larger hardware stores. The control panel module typically includes instructions for planning and installing it and the various components around the basement.

If you’re adding to an existing security system, refer to the owner’s manual for instructions. If not available, contact the manufacturer. If all else fails, call a local security system installer for help or advice.

Fortunately, security systems are relatively easy to install. The control panel is centrally located and connected to power, then the various switches and sensors are installed at access points, typically doors and windows.

Smoke detectors are installed as connected or independent components of your security system. If the detector relies on house wiring for power, make sure it has some type of battery backup so it will work even if the lights go out.

Security switches and sensors are low-voltage devices. That means the wires running to them are relatively small and easier to hide. If you pre-installed the wiring you only need to attach and test the devices. If not you need to also run the wiring between the device and the control panel.
