Basement Types

There are many types of basements build under homes. So one of your first tasks will be to determine what type your home has. A full basement is approximately the same size and height as the home’s main floor. A partial basement is one that is about 80 percent or less the size of the first or main floor. A closed basement can only be accessed from stairs on the home’s main floor. A walkout or daylight basement is one that includes a door directly out from the basement.

Here are a few other basement terms: a finished basement is one that can be lived in; that is it has walls, electrical and plumbing service, and a finished floor. In most homes a finished basement is sectioned off into rooms, typically each with a specific purpose: bedroom, bathroom, recreation room, laundry, storage, etc. An unfinished basement is one that isn’t—but could—be finished. The purpose of this website is to help you remodel an unfinished basement into a finished one. Again, the same process can be used to convert a garage into living space.
