Basement Pros and Cons

Finishing a basement offers many advantages to homeowners who need extra space. Foremost, the space already is enclosed. Finishing it off is less expensive than building new space beside or above the existing foundation. In addition, services such as electricity, water, and heating, are nearby, typically in the main floor’s flooring system (the basement’s ceiling). Finally, most homeowners have or can easily develop the skills needed to finish a basement.

What’s the downside to finishing your basement into living space? Finishing a basement that has structural or water problems can be more expensive than starting anew. Of course, they need to be taken care of anyway, so deciding to finish the basement gives you a good reason to repair it. Also, depending on the type of basement your home has (covered in the next section), it may be too small to be useful for anything but storage. Fortunately, you may be able to expand and finish a crawl space or cellar into a partial or even full basement. This website will show you how.
