| Selecting Cabinets |
|
Cabinets are available in standardized sizes. That makes the selection and installation job easier. In addition, local building codes tell you how high to install hanging cabinets. So the guesswork is reduced. However, there still are decisions to make when selecting cabinets such as style and quality. The two types of cabinets are framed and frameless. Framed cabinets are the traditional style that use oak and other decorative woods with exposed hinges. Frameless cabinets are more contemporary with flat surfaces, often covered in a colored melamine and with concealed hinges. There are hybrid cabinets as well with some of the features of each.

Custom cabinets can be beautiful. They are also expensive. If your budget allows, consider at least one custom cabinet for your new basement. Maybe it’s for the entertainment center or a wet bar, somewhere with high visibility. Otherwise, you’ll find that stock cabinets are quite adequate, and the better ones are solid and decorative. Don’t pass them by without considering them.
