Installing Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring materials are especially popular with do-it-yourselfers who are finishing their basement. Vinyl is a good choice for areas where moisture is a potential problem. It comes in sheets and is easy to cut (thought not always easy to handle and lay). It holds up well to heavy traffic. And it’s relatively inexpensive.

Fortunately, you can buy vinyl flooring in either sheets or squares. Squares resolve the bulk issue of sheet vinyl but they introduce a new one: seepage. Water can seep between 12-in. square vinyl tiles and damage the subfloor below. However, a good vapor barrier, waterproof adhesive, and careful installation can make vinyl square just about the easiest flooring to install.
