| Installing Tile Flooring |
|
Most folks opt for ceramic or porcelain tile in either 9 in. or 12 in. squares. You can mix and match colors—and even sizes—to come up with a unique pattern. Tile installation requires spreading a mastic or adhesive into which the tiles are set. Temporary plastic spacers between the tiles keep them at the proper distance for the next step. Once cured, spread the floor with grout, working it into the space between tiles at a 45 degree angle. Select the mastic and grout based on the tile manufacturer’s or retailer’s recommendations.

In some ways, tile is easier to install than hardwood flooring, especially over basement concrete. Tile requires a firm surface because movement in the tile caused by furniture and traffic can crack unsupported tile.
