Finishing Flooring

You’re not done. Once the flooring is installed and the walls are painted you can install trim around the floor’s perimeter. Trim includes a baseboard at the bottom or base of the wall. If you’ve installed flooring materials that have a gap between the flooring and the wall (hardwood, laminate, tile, etc.) you’ll want to cover the gab with quarter-round trim.

Remodeling Words

Trim is any finish materials in a structure that are placed to provide decoration or to cover the joints between surfaces or contrasting materials. Door and windows casings, baseboards, picture moldings, and cornices are examples of trim.

Most trim is installed by nailing or stapling it in place. The baseboard is attached to the wall and nails go into the wall studs. Quarter-round trim is fastened to the baseboard. Alternately, vinyl flooring often is trimmed with a vinyl splash molding, especially in rooms that may get a wet floor such as a kitchen or bathroom. The vinyl trim comes in rolls and is installed using an adhesive.

Finally, install thresholds or transitions between rooms of different flooring materials. Two adjacent rooms with vinyl tile don’t require a threshold, but the seam where carpet and tile or another flooring material meets should be covered. In addition, install a riser threshold if one of the floors is lower than the other.
