Buying Flooring

Where can you buy flooring material? Because many flooring products for the do-it-yourselfer are commodities, you can find them virtually anywhere. Hardware stores, building material retailers, flooring stores (obviously), and even discount chains carry popular types and brands. Yes, you also can find flooring materials on the Internet. (I recently purchased 800 sq. ft. of prefinished solid hardwood flooring that way!)

However, the best place to start looking typically is at a large flooring store. Why? Because they will have the greatest selection. In addition, you can get the best advice. Their prices may be higher than at a building materials supplier, but the advice and selection may be worth the difference. Ask the flooring store about discounts, sales, and close-outs to bring the price even lower.

Wherever you buy, make sure you can get information and service after the sale—especially if this is your first flooring project.
