| Installing a Tile Ceiling |
|
Drywall is attached directly to the joists. Ceiling tile, because the tile is smaller, is attached to a grid of 1 X 3 in. wood members called furring strips. So the first step to installing a tile ceiling is to install the furring strips. Their location depends on the width of the tile you’re using. Start with a furring strip along one wall perpendicular to the joists and space subsequent furring strips to support the tiles. Ceiling tiles have two lower lips and two upper lips. The lower ones are used to fasten the tile to the furring strip. The upper lips cover the lower ones so the fastener doesn’t show. A shop stapler can be used to install the tiles, making the job relatively easy. Plan the layout so that the border tiles are the same width on each side of the ceiling. Cut and install the border tiles on one side of the room, then install full tiles across the room. Make sure that each tile is installed square and snug before moving on.
