Reviewing Your Project

Is finishing your basement really a good idea? Or will you wind up with a partially finished basement and no money to pay the mortgage?

There are thousands of partially finished basements in the U.S. and Canada. Some are the victims of lost jobs or domestic changes, but many are not finished because the owners weren’t sure of what they were getting in to. They didn’t think it through, figuring costs and finding ways to keep them within their means. That won’t happen to you because you’re doing it right, planning the job before you smack the first nail.

Remodeling Tips

A wise man once said, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower [Editor: or a basement]. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’” —Luke 14:28-30 NIV

Before I even get into estimating costs, though, here are four questions you should answer. As they are asked I’ll expand on them to help you answer them to the best of your knowledge. Your answers are important to determining the total cost and value of your new basement.
