It’s impossible for most folks to know exactly how long they will live in a specific home before moving on. Jobs change. Life makes unplanned announcements. Other investments ripen or go sour, altering finances. However, what’s your best current estimation of how long you expect to live in your current home? The answer is important because basement remodeling is a long-term project, typically taking a few months to a year. In addition, you may not get all of your investment back if you must sell your home with a partially finished basement. In areas where home values appreciate fast, finishing a basement can be an excellent investment that multiplies potential profits from the sale of your home. In places where home values increase slowly—or actually go down—some of the money spent on finishing a basement may be lost until the home appreciates more in value.
